The technology explained

What is a Virtual Power Plant and how does it work?

A VPP does not physically combine thousands of batteries in one place. It uses communications and control software to coordinate many separate energy assets so they can respond together when the electricity system needs additional supply, reduced demand or another grid service.

For Perth households, the most common VPP asset is a compatible home battery connected to rooftop solar. Depending on the VPP and technology involved, other controllable energy resources can also potentially participate.

01 Rooftop solar Produces electricity at individual homes.
02 Home battery Stores surplus solar or grid energy for use later.
03 Communications Allows compatible devices to receive and respond to remote signals.
04 VPP operator Coordinates many participating household systems.
05 Electricity system Can receive aggregated support during selected periods.
Your battery does not become public property. Joining a VPP means entering an agreement with a VPP operator. The operator's access, battery control, event rules, credits, reserve settings and exit conditions depend on the specific agreement you accept.

Why Virtual Power Plant Perth participation matters more now

VPPs have moved from being mainly a pilot concept in Western Australia to becoming part of battery incentives, technical standards and the longer-term design of the South West Interconnected System.

01

WA battery rebate

Households accessing the WA Residential Battery Scheme are currently required to participate in an eligible VPP product.

02

Federal battery support

Eligible grid-connected battery systems claiming Federal battery STCs must be technically capable of VPP participation, even when the customer does not immediately join a VPP.

03

WA connection changes

New and upgraded systems on the SWIS now operate under modernised connection and communications requirements designed to support greater solar, battery and flexible-export participation.

04

Project Jupiter

WA is now moving beyond VPP trials towards wider integration of customer-owned solar and batteries through the Project Jupiter program.

An important eligibility distinction

Do battery rebates require you to join a VPP?

The answer depends on which incentive you are talking about. Being technically VPP-capable and actually signing a VPP participation agreement are not the same requirement.

Australian Government

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

For eligible on-grid systems, the battery system and inverter must be technically capable of participating in a VPP to claim battery STCs.

  • VPP technical capability is required for eligible on-grid systems.
  • You do not generally have to join a VPP simply to meet the Federal VPP-capability requirement.
  • The capability gives you the option to participate now or in the future.
  • Additional hardware, software or communications requirements may apply if you join later.
Western Australia

WA Residential Battery Scheme

The WA Residential Battery Scheme currently requires eligible households receiving the State rebate or applicable scheme support to participate in a qualifying VPP product.

  • Actual VPP participation is a current WA scheme requirement.
  • Synergy customers can use Synergy's eligible VPP product or an eligible alternative where the scheme requirements are met.
  • The battery, inverter and installation still need to meet the applicable technical requirements.
  • Scheme eligibility should be checked before equipment is ordered or installed.
Australis Solar design principle: choose battery capacity and system architecture around the property first, then confirm which rebates and VPP arrangements the proposed configuration is eligible for. An incentive should improve an appropriate design rather than determine the design by itself.
For Synergy customers

How does Synergy Battery Rewards fit into a VPP?

Battery Rewards is Synergy's current residential VPP product for eligible customers with compatible battery systems installed through the WA Residential Battery Scheme.

When the electricity system experiences selected peak-demand periods, Synergy can remotely coordinate participating batteries through compatible communications and inverter controls. During an activation event, household usage remains part of the operating arrangement and eligible exported energy can receive credits under the current Battery Rewards terms.

Payment rates, activation conditions, contract terms and technical eligibility can change. Rather than duplicating those changing figures across multiple Australis pages, we maintain a dedicated Battery Rewards guide and recommend checking the current Synergy terms before relying on any payment assumption.

VPP suitability depends on the exact battery, inverter, communications setup and current program requirements. Product eligibility should be confirmed for the proposed system.
Two different functions

A VPP does not automatically provide blackout backup

VPP participation describes how a compatible energy system communicates with and can be coordinated by an external operator while the grid is operating.

Blackout backup is an electrical design function. It requires compatible battery and inverter equipment, appropriate switching and isolation, sufficient inverter output and a defined plan for which circuits or household loads remain supplied when the grid is unavailable.

A system can be VPP-capable but have no blackout backup. Conversely, a properly designed backup system still needs separate assessment of any VPP program it may join.

Read the agreement, not only the headline reward

What should you check before joining a VPP?

A VPP can provide financial or system benefits, but each program has its own equipment requirements and contract. Compare the operating conditions as carefully as the advertised reward.

1. Equipment eligibility

Confirm the exact battery, inverter, firmware, communications setup and installation configuration accepted by the program.

2. Battery access

Understand when the operator can charge, hold or discharge the battery and whether individual activation events can be declined.

3. Credits and costs

Check how export credits, energy-offset credits, tariffs, fees and any other financial benefits are calculated.

4. Battery reserve

Understand how participation interacts with your preferred battery reserve, household consumption and any separately designed blackout reserve.

5. Warranty and cycling

Review the battery manufacturer's warranty and how additional charging and discharging through a VPP is treated under its operating conditions.

6. Contract and exit terms

Check the contract period, eligibility changes, internet requirements, relocation rules, termination conditions and what happens if the property changes owner.

Do not compare VPPs using only a headline cents-per-kWh figure. The value to your household depends on the full agreement, how often events occur, what energy is made available, your normal battery strategy and how the program interacts with your tariff.
Design the system before choosing the program

How Australis Solar assesses a VPP-ready Perth battery system

VPP compatibility matters, but it should not replace proper solar and battery design. Australis Solar first works out what the property needs to generate, store and use, then confirms which current VPP, incentive and network requirements apply.

1
Analyse your energy use

We review your Synergy bill, available interval data, daytime usage, evening imports, overnight consumption and solar exports.

2
Assess the existing system

Panels, inverter, phase, switchboard, metering, communications, system age and battery compatibility are checked.

3
Define your objectives

We clarify self-consumption, grid reliance, battery capacity, backup circuits, reserve requirements and future EV charging.

4
Confirm compatibility

The proposed design is checked against current equipment approvals, Western Power and Synergy requirements, incentive conditions and relevant VPP eligibility.

From pilot to wider integration

From Project Symphony to Project Jupiter

Western Australia's approach to VPPs has developed significantly over the past few years.

Project Symphony tested whether customer-owned solar, batteries and other distributed energy resources could be coordinated as a VPP within WA's main electricity system. The pilot is now complete and demonstrated the technical feasibility of DER orchestration.

Project Jupiter is the current follow-on program. AEMO describes it as a $108 million, three-year project intended to accelerate the integration of rooftop solar, home batteries and community batteries into WA's electricity system through VPPs.

By early 2028, its objectives include making new solar and battery systems visible, compliant and capable of VPP participation, providing customers with greater participation choice, and enabling aggregated customer-owned energy resources to provide wider network and market services.

Completed pilot

Project Symphony

Tested VPP orchestration using customer solar, batteries and controllable loads in Perth's southern suburbs.

Current WA program

Project Jupiter

Builds on Symphony with a wider objective of integrating customer-owned DER and VPP participation into WA's electricity system at scale.

Why choose Australis Solar for a VPP-ready energy system?

Australis Solar is Perth-based and WA-owned, operating since 2008. We design and install solar, battery storage, blackout backup and EV charging systems around the household rather than treating VPP eligibility as a substitute for proper system design.

Designed around actual usage

Recommendations consider your Synergy consumption, solar production, exports and expected evening and overnight demand.

Existing-system assessment

We check the existing inverter, panels, phase arrangement, switchboard and communications before recommending a battery retrofit.

Backup designed separately

Blackout requirements, inverter output, switching equipment and priority loads are defined rather than assumed from VPP compatibility.

Local installation and support

Accredited in-house installers and licensed electricians work from the documented design through installation, commissioning and handover.

Perth homeowner questions

Virtual Power Plant Perth FAQs

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP, is a network of distributed energy resources such as compatible home batteries and solar systems that are connected through communications and coordinated using software. Aggregating many individual systems allows them to respond together to electricity-system requirements.

Do I need to join a VPP to receive the WA battery rebate?

Yes. Under the current WA Residential Battery Scheme requirements, eligible households receiving the State battery rebate or applicable scheme support must participate in a qualifying Virtual Power Plant product. Eligibility and program requirements should be checked against the current WA Government rules before installation.

Does the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program require me to join a VPP?

Not generally. Eligible on-grid battery systems must be technically capable of participating in a VPP to claim battery STCs under the Federal program, but the Federal VPP-capability requirement does not itself require the customer to join a VPP. The separate WA Residential Battery Scheme currently requires participation for eligible WA scheme customers.

How does Synergy Battery Rewards work?

Battery Rewards is Synergy's current VPP product for eligible customers with compatible battery systems installed through the WA Residential Battery Scheme. Synergy can remotely coordinate participating batteries during selected activation periods and provides credits under the current program terms. Payment rates, event conditions and eligibility can change and should be checked with Synergy.

Can I choose not to participate in an individual Synergy Battery Rewards event?

Under Synergy's current Battery Rewards information, customers cannot choose individual activation events to participate in because the battery is managed remotely through the compatible communications system. Contract, exit and eligibility conditions are governed by the current Battery Rewards terms and should be reviewed before joining.

Does a VPP-compatible battery work during a blackout?

Not automatically. VPP compatibility and blackout backup are separate functions. Backup requires compatible inverter and battery equipment, appropriate switching or gateway hardware, electrical isolation, sufficient available power and a design defining which circuits or household loads are supported during an outage.

How much money can I make from a VPP?

There is no universal VPP return. Payments or credits depend on the operator, tariff, contract, activation frequency, amount of energy exported and current program terms. A headline payment rate should not be treated as a guaranteed annual return. Review the full agreement and how it affects your normal battery operation.

Can an existing solar or battery system join a VPP?

It may be possible, but eligibility depends on the existing battery, inverter, communications capability, firmware, metering, internet connection and the requirements of the specific VPP. Older or incompatible equipment may need modification or replacement before participation is possible.
