Synergy Battery Rewards: A Smart Opportunity for Solar Battery Owners in Perth

How Synergy’s Battery Rewards Programme Could Transform Solar in Perth

Western Australia has one of the highest uptakes of rooftop solar in the world—and with the energy landscape rapidly evolving, the next frontier is battery storage. As solar customers look for smarter ways to manage their energy use, Synergy’s Battery Rewards programme is leading the way in 2025, enabling WA households to earn bill credits, increase their solar return on investment, and become part of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) network that supports the broader electricity grid.

We wrote a blog previously about Project Symphony: The Future of Energy and Virtual Power Plants in Australia. It was a collaborative initiative launched in 2021 between Synergy, Western Power, and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). It demonstrated how VPPs could enhance power system security and network reliability.

At Australis Solar, we’re seeing increased demand from customers in Perth who are eager to understand how their home battery system can do more than just store energy—it can help power the state and generate real savings in the process.

What is Synergy’s Battery Rewards Programme?

The Battery Rewards Programme is a forward-thinking initiative by Synergy that connects eligible solar battery owners to a distributed energy platform—known as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This VPP enables Synergy to access stored energy from home batteries across Perth and other areas of the SWIS (South West Interconnected System), particularly during peak periods when demand is high and supply is strained.

Rather than relying solely on large-scale generators, Synergy can call upon a network of residential batteries to feed into the grid. It’s a smarter, decentralised way of managing energy—and participants are rewarded for their role in making it happen.

In short:

  • You allow Synergy limited access to your battery during peak grid demand.

  • Synergy dispatches energy from your system when needed.

  • You earn financial credits on your electricity bill in return.

Who Is Eligible to Join Battery Rewards?

If you live in Perth or regional WA and already have a battery—or are considering installing one—you may qualify. To participate, you must:

  • Be a Synergy residential customer

  • Be connected to the SWIS grid (covers Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, and many regional centres)

  • Own a compatible battery system, such as:

    • Sigenergy 5-in-One

    • BYD HVM battery systems

  • Have a smart meter installed that allows remote monitoring and control

Australis Solar can assist in verifying your eligibility and help upgrade your system if required.

Updated Rebates for Perth Households

From mid-2025, rebates have changed significantly. Here’s what’s available for eligible Perth homes:

WA State Battery Rebate (Synergy customers):

  • $130 per kWh, capped at 10kWh

  • Maximum State rebate: $1,300

  • Previously $500/kWh with a $5,000 cap—this has been adjusted to increase access and sustainability

Federal Battery Rebate (Cheaper Home Batteries Programme):

  • Approx. $350 per kWh of Battery Capacity

  • STCs will only be provided for the first 50 kWh of the usable capacity of a battery system

  • Structured as a tradable certificate scheme (administered federally)

Total Possible Support:

  • Eligible Perth homes may access up to $6,300 in combined rebates for a 10kWh system

Why This Matters: The Future of Solar in WA

Battery Rewards is more than a clever incentive—it’s part of a broader evolution in how Western Australia manages electricity. As solar penetration increases (more than 1 in 3 WA homes have rooftop PV), managing excess generation and peak demand is critical.

With distributed battery systems acting as mini power stations, Synergy can:

  • Stabilise the grid without costly upgrades

  • Reduce fossil fuel dependency

  • Support WA’s net-zero emissions targets

Homeowners benefit by:

  • Monetising their battery through Synergy bill credits

  • Supporting a community-powered energy network

  • Future-proofing their systems for new policies and technologies

How Much Can You Earn?

Your potential earnings will vary based on your battery size, daily energy usage, and how frequently Synergy dispatches your battery. That said, most participating households can expect to receive Synergy bill credits worth several hundred dollars annually.

While some solar users have expressed concern over Synergy’s ability to control battery discharges—up to six hours per event, 30 times per year—the financial incentives make participation attractive for many.

A Practical Example:

If Synergy discharges 15kWh from your battery and you subsequently import 15kWh from the grid, here’s what you’ll receive:

  • Battery Dispatch Payment: 15kWh × $0.70 = $10.50

  • Import Credit (Synergy covers grid usage during discharge): 15kWh × $0.3158 = $4.74
Total credit for the event: $15.24

If this were to occur 30 times per year (the maximum under current terms), the annual benefit would be $315 ($10.50 x 30), with a potential $3,150 over 10 years—all for simply enrolling your battery in the programme.

Key Assurances:

  • Synergy will never fully drain your battery – a reserve threshold is always preserved.

  • Each event being a maximum of 6 hours, 30 time a year and limited to one charge/discharge cycle per day
  • You’ll be kept informed – with transparent communication around any major changes to the scheme.
