The centre of a solar system

What does a solar inverter do?

Solar panels produce direct current electricity. The inverter converts this into alternating current electricity that can supply appliances through the property’s switchboard.

The inverter also manages important system functions such as panel input, grid connection, operating limits, safety shutdown, production monitoring and, where applicable, battery charging and backup operation.

Selecting an inverter only by brand, price or nominal capacity can create compatibility problems later. The model must suit the panel arrangement, available phases, network conditions, monitoring requirements and intended battery or EV pathway.

Current imports, solar exports, tariff information and the timing of daytime, evening and overnight consumption.

Roof and shading

Available roof area, orientation, pitch, shading and how the proposed panels will be divided into suitable strings or inverter inputs.

Electrical supply

Whether the property has single-phase or three-phase power and how major loads are distributed across the property.

Panel compatibility

Panel voltage, current, string length, inverter inputs and the operating requirements of the proposed or existing array.

Switchboard and metering

Switchboard condition, available space, protection equipment, meter arrangement and any electrical work required for a compliant installation.

Battery and backup goals

Battery compatibility, charging pathway, backup controller or gateway requirements, nominated circuits and expected outage loads.

Monitoring and control

Production monitoring, household consumption data, internet connectivity and access to the relevant application or web portal.

Future energy plans

Additional battery capacity, electric hot water, air conditioning, pool equipment, EV charging or future changes to household energy use.

Compare the main configurations

Which solar inverter type suits your property?

String, hybrid and microinverter systems each solve different design problems. Australis Solar recommends the configuration that best matches the roof, electrical supply, battery pathway and expected operating conditions.

Common residential option

String inverter

Multiple panels are connected in strings and feed a central wall-mounted inverter. This is often a practical option for straightforward roof layouts with suitable orientations and manageable shading.

  • Centralised monitoring and equipment access
  • Suitable for many residential and commercial arrays
  • Available in single-phase and three-phase configurations
  • Panel strings must remain within model-specific limits
Important consideration

Roof orientations, shading and string lengths must match the inverter’s input arrangement rather than being forced into an unsuitable layout.

Solar and battery pathway

Hybrid inverter

A hybrid inverter combines solar and battery inverter functions within one platform. It can suit customers installing a compatible battery now or planning an identified battery pathway.

  • Integrated solar and battery energy management
  • Can reduce the amount of separate conversion equipment
  • May support compatible backup hardware
  • Battery choice remains model and manufacturer specific
Important consideration

“Battery-ready” does not mean compatible with every battery or automatically capable of supplying the property during a blackout.

Panel-level conversion

Microinverter system

Microinverters are installed at individual panels and convert electricity at roof level. They can be considered for complex orientations, unavoidable shading or panel-level design requirements.

  • Individual panel conversion and monitoring
  • Flexible across mixed roof orientations
  • May reduce the effect of one panel on another
  • More roof-mounted electronic components
Important consideration

A microinverter system is not automatically necessary for every shaded or multi-orientation roof. The benefit should justify the additional equipment.

An existing solar system may also use an AC-coupled battery pathway with a separate battery inverter. Compatibility and the intended backup function must be assessed before equipment is selected.

Choose the correct pathway

New solar inverter, replacement or complete upgrade?

Replacing a failed inverter is not always the same as designing a new system. Australis Solar assesses what can be retained safely, what remains compatible and whether the proposed work should also prepare the property for battery storage or EV charging.

New solar installation

The inverter is selected with the proposed panels, roof layout, electrical supply, consumption profile and future energy plans considered from the start.

  • Panel and string design
  • Single-phase or three-phase selection
  • Monitoring and consumption measurement
  • Battery and backup pathway
  • Network application requirements

Faulty inverter replacement

The existing array, string voltages, panel condition, cabling, isolators, switchboard connection and monitoring are reviewed before a replacement is specified.

  • Fault code and operating history
  • Existing panel compatibility
  • Manufacturer or warranty pathway
  • Current electrical requirements
  • Repair versus replacement assessment

Solar and battery upgrade

A wider upgrade may be more suitable where the inverter is old, the panel layout is restrictive, household consumption has grown or future storage and backup functions are important.

  • Additional solar capacity
  • Hybrid or AC-coupled battery options
  • Selected-circuit backup requirements
  • Switchboard and metering changes
  • Future EV charging loads

Equipment selected as a complete system

Solar inverter platforms Australis Solar assesses

Product selection depends on the required capacity, panel arrangement, monitoring, battery pathway, backup function, electrical supply, approved-product status and current availability.

Fronius platforms

Fronius string and hybrid platforms may suit new solar installations, battery-ready designs and compatible backup configurations.

The exact inverter, battery, meter and backup controller must be selected as a compatible combination. Backup capability depends on the completed system, not the inverter name alone.

Sigenergy platforms

Sigenergy controller and hybrid pathways can combine solar generation, battery storage, monitoring and optional backup equipment within an integrated system.

The controller capacity, panel inputs, battery capacity, gateway, phase and intended loads must be confirmed for the property.

Other approved options

Other string, hybrid or microinverter products may be considered where they provide a better fit for the roof geometry, existing panels, phase arrangement, monitoring requirements or project budget.

The final proposal confirms the selected manufacturer, model, capacity, warranty information and installation assumptions.

Product families shown are not a guarantee of stock, approval or compatibility for every installation. Exact equipment is confirmed in the completed design and quotation.

Property assessment

We assess the roof, shading, panel layout, electrical supply, switchboard, inverter location and available equipment pathways.

System design

Suitable inverter capacity, panel strings, battery compatibility, monitoring and backup requirements are brought into one design.

Approval and installation

Required applications are coordinated and the work is completed by accredited in-house installers and licensed electricians.

Commissioning and support

The system is tested, connected to monitoring where applicable and explained during handover, with local service support available.

Western Australian requirements

Solar inverter approvals, export limits and blackout operation

The inverter must satisfy the applicable product, electrical, retailer and Western Power connection requirements. Capacity and export arrangements cannot be assumed from the product specification alone.

Network approval and export settings

The approved inverter capacity and export arrangement depend on the property’s electrical supply, point of connection and proposed system. Some applications can require further technical review or specific export controls.

Synergy eligibility

Synergy’s Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme has defined customer, tariff, metering and inverter-capacity requirements. Connection approval does not by itself guarantee eligibility or a particular export payment.

Blackout operation is not automatic

A standard grid-connected solar inverter normally shuts down during a grid outage. Battery-backed household backup requires compatible battery and inverter equipment, appropriate switching or gateway hardware and a design for the intended circuits and loads.

Fronius GEN24 PV Point is a limited backup option: a dedicated single-phase outlet can supply up to 3 kW without a battery when sufficient solar power is available. It is not an uninterrupted supply or whole-home backup. Operation depends on available power and the installed configuration. See the Fronius GEN24 operating instructions.

Selected-circuit backup and whole-home backup are different designs. Available power remains limited by inverter output, battery state of charge, phase configuration, appliance loads and equipment settings.

Straight answers for Perth properties

Solar inverter FAQs

Practical answers about inverter selection, batteries, replacement, exports and blackout operation.

What does a solar inverter do?

A solar inverter converts direct current electricity produced by solar panels into alternating current electricity used by household or business appliances. It also manages grid connection, safety functions, operating limits and system monitoring.

Which solar inverter is best for my Perth home?

The most suitable inverter depends on the panel layout, roof orientations, shading, single-phase or three-phase supply, switchboard, household loads, monitoring requirements and future battery or backup plans. Australis Solar assesses these factors before recommending a model.

Is a hybrid inverter worth choosing before I add a battery?

A hybrid inverter can provide a defined battery pathway when the compatible battery family and future requirements are already understood. It is not automatically the best choice for every property, and it will not work with every battery brand or provide blackout power without the required compatible equipment.

Will my solar inverter work during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected solar system normally shuts down during a grid outage. Battery-backed household backup requires compatible inverter and battery equipment, appropriate switching hardware and a design for the intended circuits and loads. Fronius GEN24 PV Point can supply a dedicated single-phase backup outlet at up to 3 kW without a battery when sufficient solar power is available. It is not an uninterrupted supply or whole-home backup; operation depends on available power and the installed configuration.

Can Australis Solar replace an inverter on a system installed by another company?

Australis Solar can assess many systems installed by other companies. Replacement remains subject to the condition and compatibility of the panels, strings, cabling, isolators, switchboard, documentation, manufacturer support and current electrical requirements.

Does inverter size affect DEBS or export limits in WA?

It can. Synergy eligibility, Western Power connection approval and permitted export settings can depend on inverter capacity, the property’s electrical supply and current scheme requirements. These conditions are checked before the final system is confirmed.

What should I provide for an inverter quote or assessment?

Provide a recent Synergy bill, the property address, inverter brand and model, photos of the inverter and switchboard, any fault code or warning, monitoring screenshots and details of future battery, blackout backup or EV charging plans.
