Greenwood solar upgrade case study
Greenwood Solar Upgrade Replacing an Older 10-Panel System
Australis Solar completed this Greenwood solar upgrade for a homeowner replacing an older 10-panel system. Our Perth-based, WA-owned team removed the legacy array and inverter, then installed a 6.6 kW system using 15 × Trina Vertex S+ 440 W N-Type dual-glass panels and a 5 kW Fronius Symo three-phase inverter. The project also included Clenergy racking, a distribution board upgrade, new earth stake and Fronius Solar.web monitoring.
The replacement design retained the preferred inverter position and was completed through testing, commissioning and the required Synergy and Western Power approval process.

Replacing an existing solar system
Customer Objective and Design Considerations
This was an existing-system replacement rather than a straightforward first-time solar installation. Australis Solar had to coordinate the new array and inverter with the property's existing electrical infrastructure while completing the work required for current compliance, commissioning and monitoring.
Replace the Older 10-Panel System
The existing solar array and inverter needed to be safely decommissioned and removed before the replacement system could be installed.
The new design provided 6.6 kW of panel capacity using 15 Trina Vertex S+ 440 W modules.
Retain the Preferred Inverter Location
The new Fronius Symo inverter was required to use the position previously occupied by the older inverter.
The existing location and electrical connection therefore formed part of the replacement assessment rather than being treated as an unrelated new installation.
Address the Existing Electrical Infrastructure
The project required a new earth stake together with planned distribution-board work.
RCD protection and wiring were reviewed as part of the upgrade so the new solar equipment was integrated with the property's electrical system rather than simply connected to the legacy arrangement.
Complete Commissioning, Monitoring and Approvals
The project continued beyond the physical installation. Testing and commissioning were completed and Fronius Solar.web monitoring was configured for the customer.
The required Synergy and Western Power processes were also completed, including Western Power approval to operate.
One coordinated replacement system
System Design and Installed Components
The Greenwood upgrade combined new solar generation equipment, mounting, electrical work and monitoring. Each component had a different role within the completed replacement system.

15 × Trina Vertex S+ 440 W Panels
Fifteen Trina Vertex S+ N-Type dual-glass modules provide 6.6 kW of total nameplate solar capacity.
The panels form the complete replacement rooftop array after removal of the property's previous 10-panel system.

5 kW Fronius Symo Three-Phase Inverter
The Fronius Symo converts DC electricity from the solar array into AC electricity for the property's three-phase electrical system.
The replacement inverter was installed in the location previously used by the older inverter and integrated with the new solar installation.

Clenergy Solar Racking
Clenergy racking provides the mounting structure supporting the new 15-panel rooftop array.
The mounting system forms part of the complete mechanical installation and securely integrates the replacement panels with the existing roof.

Distribution Board and Earthing Upgrade
A new earth stake was installed after the existing earthing arrangement was identified as requiring an update.
The planned distribution-board work also incorporated the required RCD protection and wiring work associated with the upgraded installation.

Fronius Solar.web Monitoring
Fronius Solar.web access was configured as part of commissioning so the customer could access the system's monitoring platform.
The completed handover also included the relevant project documentation and registration pathway.
Existing-system challenges
Problems and Australis Solar Solutions
The Greenwood project involved more than replacing one solar system with another. Legacy equipment, earthing, distribution-board work, inverter placement and network requirements all had to be resolved as part of one coordinated upgrade.
Legacy Solar System Removal and Replacement
Challenge
The property already had an older 10-panel solar system and inverter that needed to be removed before the replacement installation could proceed.
Australis Solar assessment
The legacy equipment had to be safely decommissioned and the previous inverter position assessed for reuse within the new installation.
Australis Solar solution
The old array and inverter were removed, a new 6.6 kW Trina array was installed and the 5 kW Fronius Symo was mounted in the previous inverter location.
Existing Earthing Required an Upgrade
Challenge
The site's existing earthing arrangement required updating before the upgraded electrical installation could be completed to current requirements.
Australis Solar assessment
The earthing arrangement was reviewed as part of the complete electrical scope rather than assuming the legacy system remained suitable.
Australis Solar solution
Australis Solar supplied and installed a new earth stake as part of the upgrade.
Distribution Board Integration
Challenge
The solar replacement included planned distribution-board work, so the electrical infrastructure could not simply be left unchanged while the new generation equipment was connected.
Australis Solar assessment
RCD protection and wiring were reviewed during the planned board upgrade as part of integrating the replacement solar system with the property.
Australis Solar solution
The distribution-board upgrade was completed together with the required protection and wiring work.
Commissioning and Network Approval
Challenge
Replacing an inverter system also required the applicable connection and approval process to be completed rather than treating commissioning as the final step.
Australis Solar assessment
The replacement inverter, commissioning requirements and applicable Synergy and Western Power processes had to be coordinated with the installation.
Australis Solar solution
Testing and commissioning were completed, the required Synergy and Western Power approvals were finalised and Western Power approval to operate was issued.
WA Connection Requirements
Western Power requires an Embedded Generation Connection application when installing a new inverter system, changing or relocating an existing inverter, or adding another generation source such as a battery.

Greenwood project questions
Solar Upgrade FAQs
Practical answers based on the confirmed Greenwood installation and the factors Australis Solar considers when assessing similar existing systems.
What was replaced in the Greenwood solar upgrade?
The existing 10-panel solar system and old inverter were decommissioned and removed. Australis Solar then installed a new 6.6 kW solar array and a 5 kW Fronius Symo three-phase inverter, with the new inverter mounted where the previous inverter had been.
What solar equipment was installed in Greenwood?
The confirmed system uses 15 Trina Vertex S+ 440 W N-Type dual-glass panels for 6.6 kW of panel capacity, a 5 kW Fronius Symo three-phase inverter and Clenergy solar racking.
Why were the distribution board and earthing upgraded?
The site required a new earth stake to meet current requirements. During the planned distribution-board upgrade, Australis Solar also reviewed and completed the required RCD protection and wiring work associated with the upgraded installation.
Does the installed Fronius Symo mean the system is battery-ready?
No battery was installed as part of this Greenwood project, and the installation should not be described as battery-ready based on the inverter name alone. Any future battery addition should be assessed against the existing inverter, switchboard, electrical supply, compatible equipment, backup requirements and current WA connection requirements.
How is the Greenwood solar system monitored?
The system was configured with Fronius Solar.web monitoring. The handover process included the Solar.web registration pathway so the customer could access the system's monitoring platform.
Were Synergy and Western Power approvals completed?
Yes. The confirmed project information states that the required Synergy and Western Power approvals were completed, testing and commissioning were carried out and Western Power approval to operate was issued.
Would the same 6.6 kW solar upgrade suit every Greenwood home?
Not necessarily. A similar upgrade should be designed around the home's Synergy bill, electricity usage, roof area, orientation, shading, existing panels and inverter, switchboard, electrical supply, future battery or EV plans and current connection requirements.

Planning a Solar Upgrade in Greenwood?
An existing solar system should be assessed before deciding what to retain, replace or expand. Australis Solar can review your Synergy bill, actual usage, roof, shading, existing panels and inverter, switchboard, electrical supply and future battery, blackout backup or EV charging plans.
Our Perth-based, WA-owned team has operated since 2008 and designs solar upgrades around the actual property and electrical system rather than relying on a standard package.
